LCHF Flourless Chocolate Cake

A nice low-carb flourless chocolate cake from Cor Winckler’s Banting Blog – Banting Core.

Banting Core

My biggest concern with ‘normal’ cakes that use almond flour, is that they end up typically quite high in kilojoules. This recipe contains no flour at all. So you are basically eating an egg, some cream and cacao.

If you get sweet cravings from eating xylitol, then beware. But if you dont have that problem, then this is a lovely snack.

The texture of the one I baked was nice and smoothe. I think one can bake this as cupcakes in the oven too, and it should come out more consistent. Microwave cakes tend to rise quickly, and then collapse back down. Of course the convenience factor of starting now and eating cake 5 minutes from now is always a plus.

I tested my ketone levels the morning after having this, and it did not affect my ketosis at all.

Frequently Asked Questions about Moringa

As an agent for Nature’s Best Moringa, we want to answer all your questions about Moringa. See below a list of Frequently asked questions about Moringa and also visit our previous post giving much more information about Moringa.

Q: Is Moringa just another dietary fad/super food?

A: Moringa has been in use for more than 2,000 years and is a very valued plant for a wide variety of applications. It has been revered for centuries in countries in Asia and Africa for both its healing and nutritive value. It is only now being discovered in western culture as people look to nature for health and treatment. In many third world countries, it continues to form the basis for nutritional programs put into place by charitable organizations. The biggest challenge for Moringa is the “too good to be true” syndrome. It offers so much, that it is difficult to believe such a simple plant can be so useful.

Q: If it’s is so good, how come I haven’t heard of it?

A: Moringa is known by over 200 names in many different countries, which adds to its anonymity. It is usually the product of tropical and sub-tropical countries, where the hardy plant survives well and provides sustenance to native people. As a result, this product hasn’t been commercially farmed and produced on an industrial scale. However, it is incorporated into many “proprietary” formulas for nutritional supplements and the oil is used in many luxurious cosmetics.

Q: With the accessibility to fresh vegetables in most shops, why is a supplement like Moringa necessary?

A: Time, not availability is usually the issue. Gyms, swimming pools and sport courts abound, but we are more out of shape now than at any time in our history. In an ideal society, we would have the time to cook all of our meals from scratch with fresh vegetables that we can personally vouch for. However, most of us are so busy in the evenings with after-school activities, homework, travel, and chores, that meals are usually grabbed from the freezer or emptied from a can. As a result, our food is reconstituted, reheated, “enriched”, preserved, and genetically modified. We have only to look at the health of our youth, with a staggering increase in obesity, juvenile diabetes, and autism, to determine that all is not well in the world of nutrition. Our bodies were designed to get our nutrition primarily from plant sources. Balance is the key and Moringa is a naturally balanced nutritional supplement.

Q: Where is your Moringa grown?

A: We have our own community driven farms all over the country. All of our Organic Moringa products are grown and processed there.

Q: Where do you manufacture your products?

A: Our products are manufactured in South Africa at current Good Manufacturing Principal (GMP) production facilities under the strict regulations. Our products are tested at the facility for cleanliness and purity before encapsulation.

Q: Do you mix other parts of the Moringa tree into your formulation?

A: Our capsules contain ONLY Moringa oleifera leaf powder, no stems or fillers are used. The leaf is considered the storehouse of all nutrition in the plant and our ingredient list consists of the leaf powder.

Q: Are your products gluten and monosodium glutamate (MSG) free?

A: Yes, our products are 100% free of gluten and monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Q: I have heard that Moringa is high in calcium. Is it safe for those who suffer from lactose intolerance?

A: You have heard right. Moringa is rich in many nutrients and has a high calcium value, pound for pound, 17 times the calcium in milk. Despite this, it is safe for all to consume, including those who are lactose intolerant, as it doesn’t contain any lactose.

Q: Is your Moringa genetically modified?

A: No. Moringa oleifera is beneficial in its natural form and does not need to be genetically modified at any level. Studies in animals show genetically modified food can cause abnormalities in adults and children, and can be harmful to health. Our Moringa is grown in a natural, sustainable environment, and is pesticide, herbicide, and chemical-free, so you can rest assured it is safe to consume.

Q: How much Moringa should I take each day?

A: We recommend two capsules in the morning with breakfast and two in the evening with your evening meal. For powder, use one teaspoon twice daily.

Q: Do I need a prescription for Moringa?

A: No, you don’t. It is a completely safe and natural product, which contains ingredients your body will recognize for their nutritive value. Moringa is one of the few plants that can be consumed by the entire family. In fact the World Health Organization recommends feeding malnourished infants and children Moringa on a daily basis. If you are concerned or suffer from a medical disability, we recommend you speak to your health care practitioner before consuming Moringa products.

Q: What are some of the health benefits to consuming Moringa?

A: There are many health benefits to consuming Moringa, which is why it has earned the title of a super food, and is also sometimes known as The Miracle Tree, or the Tree of Life. While the benefits vary in degree from person to person, our customers have reported improvement in digestion, vision, energy levels, mental clarity, and overall well being. They also use Moringa to support a healthy blood sugar level, as a nutritional support for diabetes, and as an overall health and wellness supplement.

Q: Are there any side effects I may experience?

A: Moringa is packed with vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and amino acids. According to the International Organization, Trees for Life, extensive research conducted at the Noguchi Memorial Medical Research Centre in Ghana has found that it’s leaf powder has no toxic elements and no side effects were observed even in families consuming high amounts of Moringa.

However, each person is unique and responds differently. If you do suffer any side effects, they may range from mild headaches and upset stomachs, to nausea. This is simply the result of toxins being eliminated from your body. Gradually, these side effects should disappear. NO PERSON MAY USE Moringa if on any blood thinning medication.

Q: Can Moringa cure my illness or disease?

A: Moringa is a food and nutritional supplement and does not lay claim to cure or prevent any illness or disease. The FDA approves drugs to offer these benefits. Moringa is not a drug. Many of our customers consume it to support a healthy blood sugar level, as a nutritional support for diabetes, and as an overall wellness supplement.

Q: Do you ship to all over the country?

A: Yes. Our customers are located in many different parts of the country, and we use agents to assist in the delivery of our products. For more information, please visit our website for more information.

Q: Do you offer a guarantee on your products?

A: We know you’ll love our products–they are safe, healthy, and easy to utilize. But if for some reason you’re not satisfied, we offer an unconditional, money-back guarantee for purchases returned within 30 days if the packaging is unopened.

All About Moringa

1975129_616659975126244_1031818934229122639_nHave you got word of the miracle tree, or the tree of life?

Moringa Oleifera has been in existence for centuries in countries across the world, but only recently has it gotten more mainstream appeal as an ingredient utilized in many supplements.

So what is Moringa, and how can we all gain from adding this into our healthy daily regimen? See also our Frequently Asked Questions about Moringa Post.

What is Moringa?

The Moringa plant is indigenous to the sub-Himalayan areas of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It is also grown in tropical countries.

The leaves, bark, flowers, fruit, and seeds are employed to make medicine. Some people use the pods in cooking, while others eat the leaves. The plant also has flowers, which are similar to mushrooms.

The most nutritious section of the Moringa tree is its leaves, which are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

In one serving of Moringa Oleifera leaves, you can find:

22% daily value of Vitamin C
41% daily value of Potassium
61% daily value of Magnesium
71% daily value of Iron
125% daily value of Calcium
272% daily value of Vitamin A
92 Nutrients
46 Antioxidants
36 Anti-Inflammatories
18 Amino Acids, 9 Essential Amino Acids

Fresh Moringa leaves contain 70 to 75% moisture and when they are dried the moisture content goes down to below 8%, which makes the nutrients become considerably more concentrated. For this reason, Moringa leaf powder is marketed as a supplement.

The powder contains:

Oxalic Acid
Vitamin A – B Carotene
Vitamin B – Choline
Vitamin B1 – Thiamin
Vitamin B2 – Riboflavin
Vitamin B3 – Nicotinic Acid
Vitamin C – Ascorbic Acid
Vitamin E – Tocopherol Acetate

Moringa contains proteins, vitamins, and minerals. As an antioxidant, it appears to help protect cells from damage.

Precisely what is Moringa used for?

Moringa is used to relieve many ailments or as a natural daily supplement

Moringa is used in many medicines or on its own to relieve the following conditions:

Arthritis, rheumatism and joint pain
Stomach pain
Ulcers of the stomach and intestine
Heart conditions
High blood pressure
Kidney stones
Fluid retention
Thyroid disorders
Bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections

Moringa is also used to reduce swelling, as an aphrodisiac to increase sex drive, boost the immune system, and increase breast milk production.

It is sometimes applied straight to the skin to kill germs or as a drying agent (astringent). It is also used topically for treating infection (abscesses), athlete’s foot, dandruff, gum disease (gingivitis), snake bites, warts and wounds.

Oil from Moringa seeds is employed in foods, perfume, and hair care products, and as a machine lubricant. The seed cake remaining after oil extraction is used as a fertiliser and also to purify well water and to remove salt from seawater.
As it can be grown cheaply and easily, it is sometimes used in feeding programs to fight malnutrition.

Nutritional Benefits of Moringa

For millennia Moringa has been known as nature’s multi-vitamin. Moringa leaves are one of the few known plant sources to contain all essential amino acids, fiber, omega 3 oils, and over 19 minerals and vitamins.

Gram for gram, dried Moringa leaves contain about:

10 times the Vitamin A of carrots
½ the Vitamin C of Oranges
17 times the Calcium of Milk
15 times the Potassium of Bananas
25 times the Iron of Spinach
9 times the Protein of Yogurt

“Moringa comes very close to being a perfect source of nutrients, in terms of variety and concentration.” – Monica Marcu, Ph.D., Clinical Pharmacologist, author of Miracle Tree Agriculture.

One of the best aspects of the Moringa Oleifera tree is the agricultural environment it thrives in. Native to India and Nepal, the tree is fast growing and needs little water. These characteristics have allowed the tree to spread around the world into Africa, Southern Asia, and South America.

See below YouTube video for more information on Moringa.

Moringa’s Impact

Malnutrition is an epidemic. 842 million people all over the world go to bed hungry every night. 3.1 million children under age five die each year from malnutrition. Over 200 million more children have stunted growth or wasting from malnutrition and will never fully recover.
